DENNIS MACHINEGUN THOMPSON: BORN TO DRUM

Lately I find myself turning down tours with bands out there. Not that I think I am the greatest but if they don’t excite me, I’d rather take care of my father, lecture, write the blog and my books, watch Nascar, and practice the drums in my little studio.
Still put on the earphones and play along with rock drummers, but the real juice is trying to keep up with my favorite drummer, Elvin Jones from the John Coltrane Quartet. Elvin is the master, may God bless and keep his soul. The MASTER!
Elvin Jones September 9, 1927—May 18, 2004
Check out Elvin on Drummerworld.com
At about 18 I began to listen to Elvin. John Sinclair turned me on to him back in the 60’s. I have been trying to capture his wall of sound poly-rhythmic style to this day. I believe I am getting there finally.
Tony Williams: December 12, 1945—February 23, 1997
Tony Williams, drummer extraordinaire once was quoted as saying (and I paraphrase) that “Dennis Thompson, drummer of the MC5 is highly underrated and is one of the best out there.” I have that clipping some where in my memorabilia department. Once again, not to bang my own drum, but I have felt this way all of my life, and that’s okay today with me. If they built the Rock N” Roll Hall of Fame in Detroit, where it belongs, maybe I/we would be in it. Oh well…yawn…
I know. Poor me. Please go to Drummerworld.com to get the goodies on myself and all the drummers I will mention in this post. It is a great site.
Tony Williams was so versatile he could play with anybody and he is in my top ten drummers of all time. I cut my teeth doing the percussion for the infamous MC5, DKT/MC5, and all the other bands I have had the opportunity to perform with in my 57 years of playing the skins.
Also have been blessed with performing with members of the Sun Ra Arkestra on three different occasions, the last being the best ever. This was at UCLA in Royce Hall back in 2007. The Sun Ra Arkestra and DKT/MC5 shared the bill at this beautiful auditorium .
Man, I was in musical and drumming heaven! DKT/MC5 and all the members of the Arkestra did an omniversal version of Starship (penned by the great Rob Tyner, MC5 lead vocalist and songwriter.) It was a structured beginning and then all hell broke loose! Can those cats play? They are some of the best in the world. I still get goose bumps when I play the CD of that show.
I wish the powers that be could release this music to the public. More on Sun Ra and Marshall Allen (current bandleader) go to: Sun Ra Wiki
Here is a You Tube gallery of some of my favorite drummers; Elvin Jones, Billy Cobham, Tony Williams, Keith Moon, Rashid Ali, Billy Bruford, Mitch Mitchell, John Bonham, Motown session drummers Benny Benjamin, and Uriel Jones, Stax-Volt drummer Al Jackson Jr, Buddy Rich, and Bernard “Pretty” Purdy just to name a few.
Today in the present, I like to play in 3/4 & 6/8 time. When I play 4/4 (just about rock’s only time signature) I mix it up by going into multi-percussive orbits then the simple 2 & 4 upbeat. Playing simple rock is not much of a challenge and less fun to me anymore. But that’s me. I love to keep ‘Movin forward.
To that end, drumming is an art form and a science. I pretty much think drummers are born with the beat, at most the best ones are. I started at 4 years of age and just kept going. My fingers and hands are always tapping out some beat or other and that’s okay with me.
I wish to write more on drums and drumming in the future as we are planning a DVD drumming tutorial featuring myself and maybe ten other fine young and not so young drummers. This will take some time, but the end result will be well worth the effort.
Yours in motion and propulsion.

I was too young to get in on that MC5 scene, but I was exposed to it from my neighbor who went to all these shows and work with one of the local bands. It is cool to get to hear that story about Hendrix and Mitchell from Dennis, the MC5 were right in the middle of that really creative music scene in Detroit in the late 60's. They encountered all the big acts from all over the country and England that came to the Motor city without fear - bands like the Who, Led Zeppelin Jimi Hendrix, The Faces etc. that came to play at the Grande or Cobo were opportunities for the locals to upstage the big headliners. The Stooges, the Frost, Amboy Dukes, Bob Seger System, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, Alice Cooper, and all the Motown artists, it was a very cool musicial time in the Motor City. I notice that he has Elvin Jones on his juke box too and a link for Johnny B.
BTW, Dennis played on that purple mardi gras beavertail set and the beavertail dyna-sonic that I have now. The set with the snare was the house kit for a benefit show in 1996 for Greasy Carlisi who played bass in a band with Dennis called the Motor City Bad Boys (Greasy plays guitar in our band when he is able to). The band was fronted by Sirius Trixon who was a local rock character who started out as a drummer. He originally ordered that drum set back in around 64 or there about. Greasy had a massive heart attack and almost died, he had no insurance and his hospital bills were something like $50,000 or $60,000. Many of the Detroit rock n roll musicians got together and did a couple of benefit shows for him at the State - they raised $46,000! Kind of cool way to take care of one of the brotherhood of local musicians!
Just another story to tell.
great read. I really enjoy the history of the Detroit music scene, nice to hear about it from someone who was in the middle of it.

It's really great to hear where your heads at these days and where it's evolved from, too. To paraphrase John Lee Hooker, nuthin but the best & later on the rest, Dennis!
I was at the DKT/MC5 - Sun Ra show at Royce Hall (as well as many MC5 shows at the Grande, Crow's Nest, etc.) and it was a tremendous show.
I never thought about the grammatical correctness of "Kick out the Jams" before. It's not grammatical correct but it sounds sooo good!
@ MIKE JTONE,
THANKS FOR THE BACKGROUND COLOR MIKE. WE USED TO RIP UP NATIONAL ACTS LIKE A TREE SHREDDER. ALL THE OTHER DETROIT GROUPS KILLED TOO. OH, WHAT A TIME!

I have an interesting business proposal for MGT, but can't find any management contact info on the site.
Should I direct my inquiry to the Svengirly Music company?
Thanks and best of luck!

"Great stuff Dennis- Elvin Jones were you fortunate to catch him in action live? John Coltrane Quartet? I mean this sincerely when i say I always loved the double guitar attack of the MC5 but lately I have been noticing and listening to how fuckin great your drumming was ( and is i am sure) so thanks dennis."
hey Dennis,My band supported New Race in Canberra when you toured Australia in '81.I have been tracking down archival footage of my band and came across a photographer who has some great shots of you guys from the gig, some classic Ashton stuff as well as the rest of you.i will talk to him about accessing this resource-all the best-Chris.
Hi Dennis:
Just checked out your blog.
I think it’s cool how your playing has broadened over the years.
I noticed that you’re deeply into Elvin and Tony; I can relate. Given that, have you checked out John Ramsey’s book on Alan Dawson’s teachings – The Complete Drummers vocabulary? Alan taught Tony and many of the best drummer/musicians of the last 40 years; he thought deeper than most of us, and his students and this book are proof of that. I’d been deeply into these guys for years, but never having had a chance to study with Alan, getting hold of this book made a lot of why Tony did what he did much easier to grasp. Ditto Elvin.
Also, if Ralph Peterson comes through Detroit, it’s worth it to take a lesson or 2. Ralph understands this stuff very well, and is as good a teacher as he is a musician.
If this is old news, mea culpa – if not, maybe it will be to some of us.
All the best,
Nick Costa

I saw your email on your blog and could not resist sending short note to say how much the music you made means to me.
I posted some MC5 stuff in my weekly posting of ‘Rock and Roll Tuesday’ a few weeks ago on our company website and just posted some Radio Birdman after finding it in your playlist on your blog.
Thanks for rocking and inspiring a new generation. I’m hoping by posting some of my favorite bands on our website, I’ll be introducing real music like MC5 to kids who don’t have any real rockers to jam out to these days.
Rock on.
Sincerely (a fan),
