MOON MADNESS: THE REAL KEITH MOON

Yes, I have met Keith Moon. He was the legendary drummer of the Who. The man was from the future, no doubt. Met him at three or four shows that the MC5 and the Who played together.

One day in the early 70’s we got drunk together with John Bonham, drummer from Led Zeppelin at a bar in Hollywood. I was playing with the New Order at the time. Don’t ask me what we talked about. We were all out of our ever lovin’ minds. Wasted and nuts, and loudly having too much fun. (If there is such a thing.) John’s bouncer was there and that was a good thing. He kept the fans and the trouble away.

In case you don’t already know, Moon was one of my drumming mentors. He was stupid good and stole the Who’s show every time they hit the stage. Why?

Manic energy laced with enthusiasm, showmanship, and incredible drumming, this guy was way ahead of his time. You could not help but stare at him.

The first time I heard “My Generation” by the Who, I was driving home from working an afternoon shift at a Shell gas station north of downtown Detroit. I got on the freeway and this w-w-way c-c-cool stuttering vocal and tricky musical breaks were blasting from my crummy old radio.

I had a ‘58 black Ford back then. “What a snappy tune I think to myself. Hhhmmm, sounds like the Who, from “Can’t Explain” popularity.” Yup, sure was. Then all of a sudden this drummer goes nuts, and he is playing in time. A manic explosion under a repeating chorus. WOW! My Kinda Drummer!

I had to pull to off the shoulder of the freeway to hear the rest of this tune. I sat there for ten minutes after the song was finished and promised to myself that moment that this was the future of drumming and I was going to snatch every good lick from this Keith Moon bastard. No single drummer ever floored me like this. Never. Not even Mitch or Elvin.

I was mesmerized at how good he was. I went out and bought their first album and proceeded to listen and learn. So I “borrowed” his attack style. He is one of my top 4 drummers on the planet. You can definitely hear his influence in my own style of drumming.

The Who is my kind of band. Great show, great tunes, great vocals and background singing, hell, great everything! They were not afraid to take risks, and neither am I. God Bless Keith Moon. His legacy as one of the greatest rock drummers will live on forever.

Yours in Cacophony,
MGT

I love the drum climax in "Won't Get Fooled Again." WOW! Talk about fast and furious!

Thanks for posting this Dennis.I get funny looks sometimes when I mention The Who and the MC5 in the same breath. Of all the Brit bands of that era, The Who were always my favorite, because they seemed to share that same Energy(especially live) as the 5. I imagine the Who were one of the few bands that could hold their own,on the same bill as the MC5.

I am glad you survived why do you think that you were so lucky?

Funny, I was just listening to some Woodstock radio doc, they had plenty of Who on there, and Moon's style shining thru the mud. But Dennis, you had him covered in the hard hitting department

I hope you're well and you might not remember but we met in Bordeaux France a few years ago with brother Wayne and brother Michael . I'm working with Philippe Mogane of Siamese Records that you've met in the seventies in LA , he's currently working on a reissue of New Order CD with Carlton of Easy Action . I heard of the loss of your father and I wanted to tell you I was really sorry.

All the best

One of my clients is the only tribute band authorized by the remaining members of the original band, The Who Show. (The musicians rationalize that everyone, no matter when they were born, deserves to see the Who, even if the original four aren't around any more; and besides, they're paid to play music that they adore. Obviously they're extremely good rockers.)

It's astonishing to watch the replication of Moon's technique, ultra-busy but almost narrative to the other players, never mind the theatrics of standing on your kit, doing a drum roll of triplets across the double kit so fast you can't count 'em.

I've only seen one drummer not imitating the Who play in this fashion, busy but creative, in the intervening years, the drummer of Burning Tree (an L.A. band that the Black Crowes poached members from.) I wonder what ever became of him?

"It's a wonderful thing to be invited to be a FRIEND by a member of one of great rock bands that I listen to frequently! Thank you, Dennis! I was fortunate to catch the San Francisco reunion show, which featured my friend Roy Loney as a guest singer. The band sounded great! Rock on, my friend!"

The MC5 - The Best High Energy Live Band Ever!!! Fun to Hear and Fun to Watch !!! Fred Sonic Smith has the best SCREAM ever!! Mitch Ryder comes close. Love reading your stories about the MC5. I remember my friend jumping from his upstairs bedroom as Kick out the Jams came on and Knocking his head on the the top of the door below. He had a Big Knot on his forehead- we laughed our asses off. Don't feel too bad about the Rambler , I totaled my Dad's 69 Caddy - He brought it up all the time- I thought he would kill me. Studebaker's leak oil, Ramblers blow it by. Good old American Cars. Drove by Hill Street on the way to Ann Arbor U of M hospital , I seen the Big Rock!!! I told my wife & son - there's where the MC5 used stay- always mention the big FREE JOHN SINCLAIR SIGN on the front...what memories.. ThanX - Mr Zug Island Blues
